Daniel Sourani - Program Director
Campers, parents, friends, family - Shalom! It's so great to be addressing you once again as Camp Shalom's Program Director!
I can't begin to express how excited I am for Summer 2010 at Camp Shalom! At this point, I won't reveal too much about the exciting programs we've got in store for this summer - but I will say that they are going to bring our camping experience to a whole new level! Our drive to provide each and every camper with the best possible camping experience is stronger than ever, and I'm confidant that our new programs, activities and events will make this summer one of the most memorable in the eyes of our campers, and of course for our staff.
We've got a great staff team this year who come with some new specialties - that are nothing short of spectacular - and we're excited to put these to use in our everyday activities and programming, giving our campers opportunity to explore a multitude of exciting new experiences. Our unique camping philosophy of individualized programming and scheduling allows each camper to pursue his/her own interests within a structured program that is developed specifically to bring about the best possible camping experience.
I'm currently wrapping up my four year degree from the Schulich School of Business at York University where I am a full time student as well as a part time teaching assistant in the management faculty.
For now, if you have any questions or have any questions about our camping experience, our activities and/or programs, please feel free to get in touch with me, or our director, Adam.
I look forward to meeting you all!
Lauren Silver - Special Events Director
Hi everyone!
My name is Lauren Silver and I am excited to be returning to Shalom this summer as the Special Events Director! I am currently finishing my Honours Specialization degree in Media, Information, and Technoculture at the University of Western Ontario. I was a camper at Camp Shalom for three years, and went on to finish both Camp Solelim and Biluim Canada. This summer will be my sixth summer as a staff at Shalom and my second summer as the Special Events Director. In previous summers I was the Junior-Roots Unit Head and the Assistant Director of the Waterfront. I am excited for this summer because I get to devote my time at Shalom to working on my favourite part of camp: the special events. These include special days and camp-wide programs, such as Yom Israel, Banquet and many other surprises. Events like these are the unique experiences that unite campers and make camp such a special place, one where friends come together to create memories that last a lifetime. I hope you will join me in counting down the days to the summer of 2010, for it is sure to be an incredible and unforgettable experience!
Galia Amoils - Rosh Chugim (Activity Head)
GOOD MORNING CAMP SHALOM!
My name is Galia Amoils, I am this year’s Rosh Chugim, and I am super excited about returning to Camp Shalom for my 6th summer as staff. I have been a part of the YJ system for 13 years, and if doesn’t already appear to be obvious, I just cant get enough. Being 22, I am asked why it is that I still go to camp every single summer instead of staying in the city or traveling. The answer of course is so simple that the question need not even be asked….CAMP IS A MAGICAL PLACE, A PLACE WHERE YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO PARTICIPATE. We have a phenomenal summer planned for you, filled with exciting programs and exhilarating activities. Camp is just around the corner, so lets get excited and make Shalom 2010 the best summer yet!
Unit Heads Jess Bronstein - Seniors Unit Hello Seniors of 2010! Remember me? Jess Bronstein? That's right! I'm so incredibly excited to be your Seniors Unit Head for this summer! Although it is cold outside and there is still snow on the ground, I have already began counting down the days until we get to return to Camp Shalom for another amazing summer. Twelve years ago I began my journey through the Young Judea system as a Junior at Camp Shalom, which helped shape me in becoming the person I am today. Outside of Camp, I am working on completing an honors specialization through the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario. I don’t want to give away too much about what is in store for the Seniors of 2010, but I will say that I can’t wait to share another fantastic summer with all of you! Shira Yufe - Uppers Unit Shalom everyone! My name is Shira Yufe, and I am super excited to be the Uppers unit head for Summer 2010. I attend McGill Universityas an English Literature major and Psychology minor. So you may be thinking, what are my big plans for this summer? The ideas are infinite. One of my favourite Uppers highlights is the annual Uppers canoe trip, which will be heaps of fun this year! I’ve learned the importance of camp-inspired friendships because my 8 summers as a Young Judea camper (4 of which I spent at Shalom) is where I met my best friends to this day. To me, Camp Shalom is all about forming friendships and gaining a better understanding of what it means to be a Jewish youth. In the words of the Uppers cheer, “ THE UPPER INTER UNIT CANNOT BE BEAT . . . !” Evan Reinblatt - Lowers Unit My name is Evan Reinblatt, and I will be the Lowers Unit Head for the summer of 2010! I’m currently studying engineering at the University of Western Ontario, hoping to pursue a career in law. I was a camper for four years at Shalom, and this will be my third year as staff. I’m a big sports fan, and with the Olympics having just finished, I think it would be cool to get some sort of Winter Olympics program going on at camp. I also plan on working with an incredible Lowers staff team to create some brand new programming to make sure the Lowers have the best summer ever! See you all very soon! Sarah Rockman - Junior/Roots Unit Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Rockman and I am in my second year at The University of Western Ontario studying psychology and science. I went through the whole Canadian Young Judea system, and spent 7 summers at Camp Shalom as a camper. I have spent the last 2 summers as a counsellor in the Junior/Root unit and I am thrilled to be the Unit Head for the summer of 2010! My favourite part of camp is seeing the smiling faces of all the campers everyday! We have lots of fun programs and events planned for this summer and I can’t wait to meet all of you! I am excited to create new memories this summer and am counting down the days until camp starts! GO JUNIOR ROOTS!!! | Specialty Staff Avi Spector - Waterfront Director Hello Y’all - my name is Avi Spector and I’ll be directing traffic on the Waterfront this upcoming summer. This will be my sixth summer at Camp Shalom and fourth as a staff member and I’m looking forward to it being the best one yet! I joined the tzevet in 2007 as part of the Sail team and was head of the chug for the past two summers. I am a confident, well- trained lifeguard with real first aid experience; in the summer of 2008, after intensive training, I volunteered over 200 hours as a medic on an ambulance working with Magen David Adom in the south of Israel. With unbounded enthusiasm, anticipation and fervent, I look forward to providing a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for campers to experience all that the waterfront has to offer. Zev Smith - Head of Swim Program Hey Everyone! I am so excited to be your Rosh Swim for this upcoming summer! After starting as a Junior/Roots camper in 1999, and spending 11 summers in the CYJ, I can honestly say that Camp Shalom is the most amazing place to be. You create long lasting friendships with your fellow campers from day one, and develop your identity as a Jew through the unbelievable programming the camp offers. I currently attend the University of Western Ontario and am studying towards fulfilling a double major in Medical Science and Jewish Studies. I have been swimming my entire life, and teaching various levels of swim for the past 6 years. In terms of making the swim chug the best Camp Shalom has ever seen, I, as Michael Phelps puts it, “… have the opportunity to be part of swimming history. To take the sport to a new level would be an honor for me. There's no better time to try this than now.” Joey Sacks - Head of Ski Program My name is Joey Sacks, your Head of Ski for Summer 2010, and I am currently a second year student at the University of Western Ontario studying English and Creative Writing. While I attend school for eight months of the year, I anxiously anticipate the six weeks during which I get to spend on the water at Camp Shalom. I have been a camper of the Canadian Young Judea system for 11 years, and still feel as passionately about it as ever. Camp Shalom is a wonderful place for campers to excel in their water sport abilities and experience new and enjoyable activities behind the boat. Having been certified by the CampSafe Waterski Instructors Course, I intend to run a fulfilling and secure ski program open to all kinds of campers, whether they come to camp with a ton of skill or the wish to acquire some. I look forward to spending the summer of 2010 with all of you on beautiful Lake Muskoka, and remember – knees bent, arms straight! Carla Huff - Head of Arts & Crafts Hi Everyone! My name is Carla Huff and I’m Head of Arts & Crafts this summer - I’m so excited! I’m currently studying Chemistry and Math at the University of Windsor. This will be my fourth summer as a staff at Camp Shalom. I truly believe Shalom creates timeless friendships and everlasting memories! This summer at A&C we’ll be taking on a few twists to our favourite crafts and working on a special creative project as well! Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
